its unfortunate, but the government (right and left) abused and corrupted this organization so deeply that there is probably no way to save it. its rotten through and through, all the way to the core. both right and left used it as a cia political propaganda machine (which did serve some purpose, albeit shady af and with some disastrous results) the left finished it off repurposing it as an ideology propaganda machine.
How so? I’ve seen a lot of claims like this, but very little evidence.
There were definitely some regime change operations in USAID, but it’s not at all clear that we need to stop feeding children in order to stop our regime change operations. And it’s not completely clear to me that the regime change stuff is a net negative.
In terms of leftist ideology - there was none except for some small support for LGBT charities. To be clear, these were often charities in areas where gay sex is illegal. They were advocating for basic rights, not providing trans surgeries.
There were also some woke grants highlighted by the Trump administration that were actually State department grants, not USAID, which is very different.
Those lives were only put at risk because of the failures of the political elites in their countries. Continually rescuing people creates dependency and resentment. Better to ensure that the consequences of action and inaction, and the people at fault (their own leaders), are made plain, and to ensure that the developing countries have room to create their own capabilities and capacities for self knowledge and action. Aid is patriarchy. Toxic mansplaining.
Trade preserves cultural autonomy and respect. Trade, not aid.
Aid is important but why should it happen with money from taxpayers? Probaly knowing that this is something the government will not do can motivate upperclass people to be more generous and support organizations like givewell. Obviously people like you highlighting the importance of ecomonomic aid for underdeveloped nations is important and i wish more politicians on both sides did it, but it is not their responsibility
I doubt it. I see upper class people and that is not what’s happening.
Many people benefiting from aid make $20/month. But Americans can make $20k/month and still struggle with money, still not fee rich enough.
For example, my parents are in the upper class, but struggle with a big mortgage, saving for college, and sending my disabled sister to private school.
The sad reality is millions will die, and we won’t even know exactly who died because of USAID.
