Women’s share of total labour income varies worldwide. This is partly due to culture.

This piece discusses how culture mediates how women respond to economic opportunities. It draws on my work in Uzbekistan, has far wider parallels.

If people privately internalise gender ideologies or anticipate wider endorsement, then women’s economic advancement will likely remain low.

  1. Male breadwinners

  2. Stigma suppresses female labour supply

  3. Girls are less economically ambitious

  4. Hospitality culture

  5. ‘Women should stay away from men’

  6. Girls are taught to see restrictions as beneficial.
