Young Chinese people are far more gender equal than their grandparents. However, women and men have radically splintered. Most young women want equality, while men remain more conservative.

Why is this? What does it mean for business and romance?

Representative data

Rujun Yang (2023) analysed data from the Chinese General Social Survey in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017. Young Chinese men and women now have substantially different attitudes to gender. Women are more likely to be “Full Egalitarians”, rejecting all the claims below.

  1. Men should put career first, and women should put family first.

  2. For women, marrying well is better than working well.

  3. Men were born more competent than women.

  4. Women should be fired first during economic recessions.

  5. Husband and wife should share household labor equally.
